Typing Unicode Telugu using Apple Keyboard Layout

Apple layout is the second most famous layout on non-Unicode Telugu generation applications. Using the MSKLC, I created Telugu Apple Keyboard Layout for Windows. By using this, you can type in Unicode Telugu wherever you can type in English.

Instructions and notes about using Apple Keyboard Layout follows.

Instructions:

  1. Download the Apple Telugu Keyboard Layout.
  2. Unzip the downloaded zip file.
  3. Execute the Setup.exe file in te_apple folder
  4. After the installation is complete, you can switch to the Apple Keyboard Layout by pressing Left Alt + Shift. (If you are using multiple Telugu keyboard layouts, please ensure that you really selected Apple Keyboard Layout.) Pressing again the same keyboard shortcut brings you back to the English.
  5. If you want to see an indication of which layout is in use, you can enable Language Bar in Windows.

NOTES

There are some differences with the original Apple Layout, which you should be aware of.

  1. You should use Shift + key to get the vowel characters for all the keys in QWERTY row.
    • Example:To get అ, type Shift + q; ఈ = Shift + w
  2. You can get the Shifted versions of those keys, by holding Right Alt key while pressing the respective key. (You can use Alt Gr key also for Right Alt.)
    • Example: ఋ = Right Alt + w; ృ = Right Alt + Shift + w
  3. For joining (&), you can use h and H.
  4. In joinings, you should give the vowel last, instead of before ‘&’ in the original Apple layout.
    • Example: డ్లీ = chaw (instead of cwha)

Update 2011-02-03: In case you didn’t know Apple keyboard layout, I recommend you learn INSCRIPT keyboard layout (also known as DOE layout in Anu), which is standardized by the Government of India. You can use my Inscript Lekhini for typing Telugu or leaning Inscript layout.

Update 2012-05-16: The layout now includes the ZWNJ that is required to prevent hallu after pollu joining with the previous character. You can type it using Right Alt + 2. Uninstall the existing layout in your system and then install the new one from the download link above.

  8. సర్ నమస్కారం. మీరు చేసిన ఈ మేలు మర్చిపోలేనిది. కానీ నాకు ఒక చిన్న ప్రాబ్లం వచ్చింది. ఈ కీబోర్డు ఫార్మట్ ను యూజ్ చేసినప్పుడు ఒక్కోసారి ఏదైనా పదంలో హలంతం తర్వాత మరో అక్షరం కొడితే అది వత్తుగా మారిపోతోంది. ఉదాహరణకు (ఫార్మాట్ ను లో ‘ను’ అన్న అక్షరాన్ని స్పేస్ ఇచ్చి కొట్టాల్సి వస్తోంది. అదే ట్ కు పక్కనే కొడితే అది వత్తుగా మారిపోతోంది.) అలా కాకుండా ఏదన్నా జాయినర్ ఉంటే చెప్పగలరు.

    1. Please get new version (from link in the post above). After installing it, you can use Ctrl + Shift + 2 as a non joiner. For your example, you can type ఫార్మాట్ and then type Ctrl + Shift + 2 and then ను.

    2. మీరు కుడి వైపు ఆల్ట్ + 2 టైప్ చేస్తే అది అలా కాకుండా ఉంటుంది.

    Is it possible to find a programming language in Telugu font. If it is not available is it possible to develop one.

    1. There were some efforts to create a programming language in Telugu. As far as I know, couple of attempts revolved around (1) porting the code in Telugu back to C language for compiling and (2) using Telugu as much as possible say for naming variables, functions, etc. in the existing programming languages (like Perl or Python).

      It should be possible to create a Telugu programming language.

  37. Hello sir, i’m avinash from rajahmundry. I’m designing a telugu website which contains only telugu text. I know telugu typing, i’m using quark xpress and anu font manager 7.0. so i want to use the text that generated by quark xpress using anupamabold on that website. I have tried it, i realized that “Naa” and few “dheergalu” is not displaying and after a long search i realized the anu script is using apple keyboard and microsoft is using general default telugu keyboard so i shifted to leap office. i can easily shift to two types of telugu keyboard layouts so that i could copy the generated text onto website now text is showing perfectly. But the problem is i can see the text only in windows xp. Text is not displaying in telugu in windows 7 and windows 8. Can you give me any suggestions or is there any way to display the direct quark xpress generated telugu font which is in anupamabold or as you suggested to the website…. Thanks in advance.

    యాపిల్ యూనికోడ్ బోర్డు చాలా బాగా ఉపయోగపడుతోంది.
    మొబైల్స్ లోనూ, టాబ్స్ లోనూ ఆండ్రాయిడ్ ఆప్ గా యాపిల్ బోర్డును తీసుకొచ్చే అవకాశం వుందేమో పరిశీలించగలరు.
    OTG సదుపాయం వచ్చిన తర్వాత ఈ ఒక్క బోర్డు ఏర్పాటు చేసుకునే అవకాశం ఏర్పడితే
    టాబ్స్ తెలుగు వాడకంలో లాప్ టాప్ లవుతాయి. మొబైల్ లోనే ఆర్టికల్స్ తయారు చేసుకోవచ్చు.
    ఇప్పటికే ఏవైనా తయారు చేసారేమో నాకు దొరకలేదు.

    Any luck with using “anu Telugu apple” laout on MAC OS X? There is Telugu Unicode provided by Mac itself, but looking forward to get “Anu Apple Keyboard Layout” for it. Your help will be quite useful
