On the eve of International Mother Language Day (Feb 21), SiliconAndhra, in association with the IT Department of Government of Andhra Pradesh, released 3 free Telugu Unicode fonts and also launched a website called Telugu Vijavam about technical resources for Telugu computing.
For the impatient, download these 3 Telugu fonts from Telugu Vijayam website.

The fonts were announced in the last year’s ITIC 2011 and handful of donors come forward to fund these fonts (by james). In the first set, 3 fonts were released and are named after the donors or name they had chosen.

How much does it cost to create a new font? How much time does it take? I like Ravi Prakash font of the three.
The cost can range from 6 lakhs to 15, depending on the complexity of the font and the designer. Time wise about 2 to 6 months. Again, it depends. And, the above fonts still need a good amount of fine tuning to be more professional.

That’s OK. You can choose to never use these fonts at all. And, more importantly, you create—or get someone else create on behalf of you—better Telugu fonts than these and name them whatever you want.

Commercial fonts have their own font names (may be their family members names). People are purchasing them at exorbitant prices and using them happily. We need to see the functionality not the names. Here you are getting them free. Because somebody paid for them. You should be happy. If there are any look and functionality issues you can suggest them for improvement. If you de moralize people who are trying to provide free solutions for betterment how do we move forward? Please understand.

You can use any of these methods to type in Telugu. Also, tell me the exact problem. Do you see boxes or junk characters?
Are these fonts can be used for commerical purposes??? I mean web/apps etc., I am trying to find a font just like eenadu OR unicode, which are commercially available for use. Since android does not support unicode, I started creating my own scripts and font. I can assure you this process is a lot more tedius and time consuming. If you look on the web, apparently, so many fonts and no clarity which one will work where and who is the owner and where to buy if it works.
These fonts are released under OFL license. So, you can use them.
As far as Andriod, some vendors (notably Samsung) are already shipping it with Unicode support. It is only matter of a release or two Andriod getting default built-in support for Unicode.

I am getting squares when I look at some of the postings.
When I choose one of the fonts and type in a word doc, then I only see the english part of what I type. Please explain how I can type in Telugu.
